Anonymous asked: Can you recommend any over-the-counter alternatives to prescription oestrogen?
Nearly all studies on supposedly estrogenic or anti-androgenic herbal or OTC substances show little or no effect - nothing near that of actual HRT. Probably the most effective use of your time and money would be building up whatever resources are necessary for you to access medical care for transitioning.
rfpigeons asked: Zinnia, I want to know of your thoughts on my latest post about the circumgender fiasco. I might write a longer article about it. But you are a prominent voice and I wanted to know what you think. If you have spare time, that is. No rush/pressure. And if I'm totally out of line with it, lemme know. Thanks!
I can definitely see that there’s complexity here and that not everyone will fall into an easily defined and comprehensible box. For instance, I’ve actually heard from many cis women, who identify as women, but just want a penis, but still want to be women. There don’t seem to be many widely accepted models that account for things like that, or describe them in a useful way. So I don’t doubt that this person was probably just trying to work through some gender stuff. In the context of their age and inexperience, it comes across as much more innocuous.
Anonymous asked: I'm sure you didn't know how young she was and i really don't mean to attack you, but I did want to let you know. she wasn't being malevolent, she was just trying to figure things out and it came out very bad. You were the first trans person I was aware of (I've been following your internet stuff for a few years) and you were a really important voice in shaping how i talk about social issues and conceptualize my own gender. (2/2)
It is easier to assume good faith in that context, yeah. Without that key information, it does tend to blend into the background noise of cissexism. I’m glad that I could be helpful to you :)
Anonymous asked: i'm pretty sure the circumgender person was only like 13(or a troll who knows) and from the looks of her blog posts was ignorant of transmisogyny etc. I mean, this doesn't excuse how gross what she said is but a lot of adults harassed/attacked her not knowing how young she is. it's hard to conceptualize genderweirdness/dysphoria as a CAFAB person when masculinity doesn't work for you and the kid was unfortunately really misguided. Seriously, if any of these people needed help with finding trans-friendly therapists or endos or anything concrete like that, I’d help them just like I’d help anyone else
Anonymous asked: "Your trans problems aren't as important as my trans problems" - I'm a little surprised at how nasty you are responding to these people who are struggling with their gender identity. I thought you would know how to be more patient and tolerant to other people but instead you hear the word "circumgender" and immediately recoil in horror and offence.
I’m not clear on the nature of said struggle with their gender. If someone was assigned female, identifies as female, and wishes to live as female, I don’t really see where any struggle would come into play at all. So what is it that they’re claimed to be struggling with? What are the specific resources that they need? What are their goals? What kind of support do they require in this?
If you’re going to tell us to be “tolerant” of this (tolerance is only about as meaningful as a ceasefire anyway, and doesn’t indicate genuine support or understanding or a change of attitude, and if this is an actual issue then I’d prefer to do more than merely tolerate them), can you tell us what, exactly, it is that we’re supposed to be tolerating?
